In mid-October Printed Matter will be moving to Chelsea at the corner of Eleventh Avenue and 26th Street. The new location offers space for a permanent gallery area for exhibitions and an area for holding talks, launches, and performances. The renovation and preparation of the new space is costing $850,000 of which 80 per cent has been raised from foundation, corporate, and private sources.
Max Schumann the Executive Director who has worked at Printed Matter for over 26 years said "This is an extremely exciting time for Printed Matter and for publishing by artists in general. Despite warnings about the 'death of the book' in the digital age, we are witnessing a renaissance in artists' creative publishing, along with growing public interest." Indeed Printed Matter has doubled in size over the past 10 years, despite falling victim in 2012 to violent flooding caused by Superstorm Sandy. With much of its 9,000 book and artwork inventory stored in the basement the flooding caused over several hundred thousand dollars worth of damage.
