About the artwork
Brigitte Kowanz, who represented Austria at the 2017 Venice Biennale, is instantly recognizable for her use of light as a sculptural material. By incorporating language into her work—forming text from neon tubing—she highlights the ways in which language shapes both our world and our identities and reflects upon the way light fills time, space, and as well as our perceptions. By separating Lighting in two its two tenses, she emphasises the hidden agency in the word, light to lighting – it is not possible for one to exist without the other.
