About the artwork
Grayson Perry made Animal Spirit in response to the reckless behavior that led to the financial crisis of 2008. After meeting with stockbrokers and bankers, the Turner-prize winning artist became enormously frustrated with the brazen masculinity he encountered. Partly derived from ancient Japanese graphs revealing market fluctuations, the animal, half bear, half bull, represents the irrational male beast that dictates the markets.
