About the artwork
Dean's project JG is a poetic exploration of the connections between American sculptor Robert Smithson's well-known earthwork and film Spiral Jetty, 1970 and J.G. Ballard's short story The Voices of Time, 1985. Inspired by the artist's correspondence with this renowned English novelist, JG attempts to respond to the challenge Ballard set Dean shortly before he passed away, to "treat the Spiral Jetty as a mystery her film would solve." These striking lithographs feature images of maritime landscapes interspersed with more abstract brightly colored spiral shapes, investigating the formal and theoretical kinship between two great artists of our time.
