About the artwork
Paying homage to a scene from Luis Buñuel’s Surrealist classic L’Âge d’Or (1930), the German-born Julian Rosefeldt’s B&W video work transposes the action to a decadent 1920s Berlin nightclub. Extending the Spanish filmmakers unflinching social critique, Deep Gold explores the disintegration of the traditional order of the sexes and the affect of sexual emancipation on female sexuality. Drawing comparisons and similarities between then and now, the video work and this limited edition scrutinizes the cultural repercussions of the sexual revolution whilst commentating on the viewer’s very engagement with visual art.
