About the artwork

Known to explore childhood trauma through her work, Bourgeois uses her father's infidelity as the main motif of this drypoint etching—a recurring theme in the artist's practice. Stripped of its romantic connotations and imbued with a sense of emptiness, the phrase "I love you" is scrawled across music paper, recalling the song-like litany of her father's insincere expressions of love.
