About the artwork

Having passed away in 2017, American artist Vito Acconci is unforgettable for his pivotal 1960s and 1970s works, which engaged his own body in acts of masturbation and biting. This six-panel etching depicts the flags of the ‘super-power’ nations – America, the Soviet Union and China – who were competatively engaged in space exploration. Yellow stars beam next to sickle and hammer, offset by stars and stripes of red, blue and white, which partially overlap to symbolize their common aims though rivalrous approach.
