About Carsten Höller

Once a successful entomologist, the artist Carsten Höller applies the skills he learnt in the laboratory to distort and manipulate viewers' behavior in a manner never before seen in contemporary art. His work Test Site, 2006,… Read more

About the artwork

Having once been a successful entomologist, it seems fitting that Höller has returned to the creatures he spent so long studying with his six photogravures entitled Puppen. With each of these beautiful, fragile looking cocoons—in some cases with a membrane so thin as to be translucent—you feel the precise and systematic eye of a scientist. The pupal stage of insect life is extraordinary for capturing one of nature's most thrilling alterations. Although the discarded skins are rejected dead elements, under the detailed photogravure technique they become hyperreal and loaded with potential.
