About Claes Oldenburg

About the artwork

In 1971, a number of hugely prominent artists came together to produce the pro-justice portfolio Conspiracy: The Artist as Witness. The artworks were made in response to the sensational trial of the Chicago Seven, when seven defendants were charged with conspiracy to incite violence relating to the countercultural protests against American involvement in Vietnam. This deeply expressive work reveals the pop artist’s often overlooking campaigns against political injustice.
