About the artwork

Despite its sweet and innocent appearance, Damien Hirst’s I Love You is about death. Featuring the artist’s iconic butterflies, the works in this series are (like much of his oeuvre) a mediation on the universal fear of mortality. He's always been obsessed with butterflies, remarking once that they are still "beautiful even when dead." These works are made with silkscreen gold leaf to imbue them with an astonishing degree of lustre, amplifying their celestial if somewhat macabre attraction.
