About the artwork
The large-scale 4-stone lithography Begegnung im Hinterland (Encounter in the Hinterland) is part of the Richter's series 1001 Nacht based on the Arab folk stories by the same name. Here the artist hybridizes the abstract and the figurative, a fairy tale and a threatening scenario in a conflation of past and present, historical accuracy, and conflicting narratives which gesture at the globally altered perception of a post-9/11 Orientalism. Landscape is rooted in bold color transitions. Lines reminiscent of topographic patterning cloak the seemingly endless mountains in the background emphasizing the environment and its inhabitant's alien nature.
