About the artwork

In the 1970s Dieter Roth hit upon a way of using food in his artwork that, rather than decomposing disgustingly, looked refined and even beautiful. Inspired by the smells of a herb market, he began layering the spices in a manner that brings to mind desert landscapes and vivariums. Each of these windows swing open to reveal the spice on either side, a beguiling and momentous work from a one-of-a-kind artist.
