Biography of Gelitin
Gelitin is an artist collective made up of members Tobias Urban, Wolfgang Gantner, Florian Reither, and Ali Janka. Founded in 1993 and based in Vienna, the group is best known for their unconventional exhibitions and sensationalist artistic happenings where they push the patience of art dealers, the boundaries of art, public expectation, and spectacle. Their performances and installations are often deeply interactive, encouraging or relying on participatory engagement.
Gelitin has had solo exhibitions at a number of notable institutions including the Schinkel Pavillon in Berlin, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Vienna, Musée d'Art moderne de la Ville de Paris, Kunstraum Innsbruck, Kunsthaus, MoMA PS1, and the Institute of Contemporary Art in Sofia, Bulgaria. Gelitin represented Austria at the 2001 Venice Biennale, and was included in the Arsenale exhibition at the 2011 Venice Biennale.
