About the artwork
As the title of the work suggests, Ed io anche son architetto (veronese) reflects Merz's interest in synthesizing the theory and practice of architecture with his artistic production. In this example of the artist's "archi-painting", he has interspersed architectural imagery with fragments of text. Based on the work of the visionary French architect Étienne-Louis Boullée, the titular phrase was adopted by the artist who frequently began his own writings by stating "I am a painter as well". Architectural language and references are apparent in much of the artist's oeuvre.
