Biography of John Stezaker
The influential conceptual British artist John Stezaker (b. 1949) creates captivating works that are at once playful and challenging. He appropriates found photographic imagery which he cuts and collages into fascinating new juxtapositions. The resulting narratives, void of their original context, challenge our perceptions of truth and memory and our ability to transform seemingly fixed notions of reality.
With print material—such as vintage photographs and postcards—forming the foundation of John Stezaker’s work, it is only natural that Stezaker’s oeuvre is built up almost entirely of editioned prints and works on paper.
John Stezaker has had solo exhibitions across the globe, in institutions such as The Whitechapel Gallery, London, MUDAM, Luxembourg, Kemper Art Museum, St. Louis, USA, and Kunstverein Freiburg, Germany, and features in the collections of Tate Modern, London, MoMA, NYC, and the Saatchi, London, amongst others. He was awarded the Deutsche Börse Photography Prize in 2012.
