Josephine Meckseper
Untitled (March on Washington 9/24/05, Coffins, Xray)

This photograph was shot during the 2005 anti- Iraq war demonstration in Washington and explores the aesthetics of political protest. We see female protestors carrying coffins covered with the American flag as well as a highlighted red area running through the central part of the photograph. Meckseper's work explores the overlaps and interconnections between fashion, capitalism, and politics, portrayed in images of Birkenstock shoes, Palestinian head scarves, or German union logos.
