About the artwork
Intrigued by the process of alteration, Matthew Ritchie’s Sea State Two depicts a figure neither sinking nor rising, but floating as though captured in a state of perfect equilibrium. The air bubbles in the aquatint exaggerate the feeling of weightlessness but also distort the figure—as he gradually dissolves into the blue sea.
