About the artwork
Untitled (Stick) is part of a series of works Mona Hatoum has made by adapting the forms of furniture and other household objects. The works from this series replace parts designed to offer comfort and support with elements of potential torture. In this particular work Hatoum interprets the form of a distorted walking stick, bent to prevent it from offering the support that the object is intended to provide. By appealing to one's own physical sense of himself, Untitled (Stick) forces a viewer to relate and understand the work in terms of his own physicality, thus activating the space around the artwork as one of potential performance.
