About the artwork

Picasso began working with linocut in the 1950s after moving to the Côte d’Azur. Working late into the night, Picasso would wait until the next morning to be chauffered along with the piece to the local printer. That same printmaker once said that Picasso had a “had a sort of aggressive delight in encountering an obstacle and surmounting it. Difficulty gave him a jumping-off point from which to conquer fresh fields”.
