About the artwork

Peter Doig often takes inspiration for his work from photographs he has found or taken himself, as is the case with Haus der Bild (House of Pictures), a 19th-century picture gallery he encountered during a summer trip to Vienna, the capital of Austria. It is an image that Doig has returned to on numerous occasions, continually adapting and renewing, as he seeks to find a blend of nostalgia and sentiment, that evokes both the past and a potent visual experience.
