Founded in 1976 by a group of artists and writers including Sol LeWitt and Lucy Lippard, Printed Matter is a non-profit organization specializing in artists' books. As an independent publisher and bookseller, Printed Matter presents critical works dealing with issues of social, economic, and political justice, and is dedicated to the dissemination and appreciation of artist-made publications conceived outside of mainstream distribution and commercial publishing houses. With an inventory of titles by over 6000 artists and circulating over 32,000 publications annually, Printed Matter is one of the world’s most important resources for artists' books and provides a unique space for experimentation in this medium. Highlights in their collection include works by John Baldessari, Ed Ruscha, and Carl Andre. Additionally, Printed Matter organizes hugely successful annual book fairs in New York and Los Angeles, which showcase international artists’ books, zines, and catalogs.
