About the artwork

By combining a part of the human anatomy with a hand bell, Magritte confers on that object a fetishistic intensity – which in itself is the very essence of surrealism. The title of the work, The Music Lesson or The Sound of the Bell, alludes perhaps to Magritte’s unique poetic vision, that there is always so much more to be gleaned and perceived, even from a resonating bell.
