About the artwork

Rauschenberg's photoscreenprint Watermark is instilled with the chaotic yet concise energy that is characteristic of much of his work and so often the measure of his multiples. The title Watermark refers to the indelible yet blurred cultural marks imprinted in Rauschenberg's mind and memory. Throughout his career Rauschenberg was fascinated by the images and visual icons that shaped his visual culture. This piece showcases the artist's attempt to make sense of this visuality and to transmit it to a wider audience through the medium of the multiple. The sticky-taped layering of Watermark imbues the work with spontaneous and fragmented intrigue. Our eyes are immediately drawn to Botticelli's iconic painting Primavera on the right of the lithograph, which is juxtaposed with a galloping racing horse, a rococo mirror, and expectant faces in a crowd. We are left to ponder the disparate collision of ages, events, and moments, and to wonder at the artist's fragmented presentation.
