About the artwork

In ma.r.s., Thomas Ruff sourced his photographs from NASA before digitally transforming them, altering their perspective, and infusing them with color. The photographer demonstrated an affinity for astronomy from an early age, first selecting it as his subject matter in 1989 with the series Sterne—large-scale images of the night sky produced using a specially designed telescopic lens by the European Southern Observatory in Chile. ma.r.s. marks the first series where the artist experimented with 3D image-making. Some of these prints are able to be viewed with 3D eyeware in order to heighten their dramatic effect.
