Richard Prince is in the headlines again for copyright infringement having used images without permission of Sid Vicious, the former Sex Pistol's bassist.

The artist Dennis Morris is seeking an undisclosed amount for use of the image which was in fact taken in Sweden. Morris claims Richard Prince used the cover photo of David Dalton’s book El Sid, Saint Vicious, 1997, which happens to contain Morris’ photo of the musician.

The suit is highly complex and pertinent to a still not defined section of international copyright law, regarding advertising activity which pertains to Instagram posts.

Morris claims that Prince “created copies of the copyrighted Subject Image” without obtaining consent, and began widespread self-promotion of the copies to the public, and “falsely representing that the Subject Image was their own.” Richard Prince is represented by the Gagosian Gallery.
